The delivery will take place in 2025 and is being carried out by the Franco-German consortium KNDS, comprising the companies KMW and Nexter Defense Systems. This information was confirmed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and published by the Hartpunkt portal.
Background of the Agreement
Ukraine’s interest in the RCH 155 was first announced on September 17, 2022. Initially, the plan was to acquire 36 units, but the number was later increased to 54. Production of the howitzers officially began in January 2023, and the first units are scheduled to be delivered this year.
RCH 155: A State-of-the-Art Artillery System
The RCH 155 is based on the chassis of the armored GTK Boxer vehicle, configured with an 8×8 wheel setup. It is equipped with the automated AGM artillery module, derived from the German PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer. The system stands out for its reduced crew requirement — only two operators are needed — and a module that holds 30 projectiles.
With a total weight of 39 tons and powered by an 815 hp MTU diesel engine, the vehicle offers mobility and robustness in combat. Its firing range is 40 km with conventional shells and up to 52 km with high-performance munitions like V-LAP, VULCANO, and EXCALIBUR.
Impact on Ukraine
The arrival of the RCH 155 represents a significant technological leap for the Ukrainian armed forces, which aim to strengthen their defense capabilities amid growing military tensions. The system combines mobility, precision, and firepower, making it a strategic asset for Ukraine’s artillery.
