Since they were first introduced more than a decade ago, smartwatches quickly became a huge success. Nowadays, it’s even hard to find someone who doesn’t own one.

However, after exponential growth, a new report from the market research company Counterpoint revealed an unprecedented decline in the sector, with a 7% drop in global wearable sales in 2024.

Even so, expectations for 2025 are optimistic, with experts hoping for a recovery supported by new artificial intelligence features and greater connectivity with health apps.

The global decline in smartwatch sales coincided with a 19% drop in Apple smartwatch sales last year, which was criticized for lacking major innovations.

The Chinese market, on the other hand, celebrated an increase from 19% to 25% in the last quarter of 2023. Experts attribute this growth to the fact that the Chinese are exploring the market for smartwatches for children.

“The children’s smartwatch segment is gaining strength because parents are concerned about their children’s safety and want to monitor them and stay constantly connected with them,” said Balbir Singh from Counterpoint to BBC.
