According to a report by The Washington Post, the information came from a July 3 telegram from the State Department obtained by the newspaper.
The document states that the criminal used AI-generated voice commands to replicate Rubio’s voice and then carried out the scams via the Signal messaging app, using the fake email address “Marco.Rubio@state.gov“.
Three foreign ministers, a governor, and a member of Congress were reportedly targeted. The scammer’s apparent goal was to gain “access to information or accounts” belonging to members of the Trump administration.
The telegram emphasized that “there is no direct cyber threat to the department from this campaign.” State Department officials said the case would be investigated, but they did not disclose the content of the conversations or the names of the politicians involved.
