After Donald Trump’s tariff hikes, one of the companies most affected was Apple, whose iPhones are produced in China and other Asian countries.

Since the supposed goal of the tariffs was to encourage domestic industry, how much would it cost for Apple to produce iPhones in the United States? Experts suggest the price would triple — and that’s in an optimistic scenario.

Dan Ives, global head of tech research at financial services firm Wedbush Securities, estimated that iPhones made in the U.S. could cost around $3,500.

This would be due to the higher production costs compared to cheaper manufacturing in Asia — not to mention the cost Apple would face in moving its supply chain to the U.S.: just 10% of the transition would cost the company about $30 billion.

Ives also suggested that for the plan to succeed, Apple would still have to be willing to absorb some of those costs, significantly reducing its profit margins — something the tech giant would likely not prefer.
