According to Reuters, this approximately 20-page document aims to standardize and monitor companies to ensure they develop AI systems that are “secure by design.”

Signed by 18 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, Australia, Singapore, among others, the agreement emphasizes the need to develop and deploy AI in a way that ensures public safety against potential abuses.

Jen Easterly, the director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, emphasized the importance of international consensus in prioritizing security in the AI system development phase to Reuters.

“This is the first time we’ve seen an assertion that these capabilities shouldn’t just be about cool features and how quickly we can get them to market or how we can compete to lower costs. An agreement that the most important thing that needs to be done in the design phase is security.”
