A “spaceship” found on Google Maps is generating a wave of conspiracy theories about the origin of the mysterious object.
The structure, which closely resembles an extraterrestrial spacecraft, was spotted in the mountainous region of New Mexico and caused quite a stir on the internet.
The white disk, located at coordinates 34°24’21.6″N 107°05’44.5″W, about 54 km from the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in La Joya, was discovered by Google Maps users.
Even more intriguing is the fact that the mysterious object is located in the vast landscape of Sierra Ladrones, with no roads, paths, or houses in sight.
“Something in the shape of a disc embedded in a mountain in New Mexico, USA, at an altitude of 2,255 meters,” said the X (formerly Twitter) user in the caption of the post with the picture of the disc.

While some skeptics claimed the object is a “calibration target” for satellites, an old observatory, or a water reservoir, others suggested it could be a UFO.
“I’m from New Mexico and I’m very familiar with the area. There is nothing out there, pure desert, no way it could be a house, and if it’s on a table, I doubt anyone could drill to find water. There’s no reason [for a building] to be there,” analyzed one internet user.
Meanwhile, the website Metabunk ran historical files from the United States Geological Survey to find a more realistic answer. The website concluded that the structure was “a rainwater collection point that was removed and replaced with a different structure.”
This idea was reinforced after Metabunk found a photograph from 1975 showing that it had already been a small point with a path running alongside it.
“From a quick search, it appears there has been a structure built in that exact location since at least 1975, so it seems unlikely that something coincidentally ‘fell’ there,” said the site’s researcher.
