An article from The New York Times revealed that professors who use ChatGPT are being widely criticized by university students.

Students have been questioning the ethics and transparency of professors who make use of generative AI, especially considering that student use has been banned.

The report mentioned the case of Ella Stapleton, a student at Northeastern University, who identified signs of AI-generated content in class notes and presentations.

“He’s telling us not to use it, and then he’s using it himself,” said Stapleton. She then filed a formal complaint with the university, requesting a refund of the tuition for the mandatory course, totaling more than $8,000.

Northeastern denied the request, but the use of ChatGPT by professors became a topic of debate. A survey conducted by the consulting group Tyton Partners in 2023 found that 22% of higher education professors reported using generative AI regularly. In 2024, that number rose to about 40%.

While students protest against it, professors defend the use of AI. According to them, the tool helps save time, reduces workload, and allows them to focus more on individual student support.
