Telegram has been accused of having links to the Russian security service, which could put users’ data at risk.

The accusation was made by the Russian website IStories, which claimed that Telegram has a partnership with a businessman named Vladimir Vedeneev to grant privileged access to the company’s servers.

Because of this, Vladimir would be able to sign contracts as a representative of Telegram. However, one of his companies counts the Russian security service as one of its main clients.

Through this partnership, the site argued that the FSB could have access to the data of millions of app users. In a statement obtained by TechRadar, a spokesperson for the app said that while Telegram has “dozens of service providers,” none of them have access to sensitive data.

“All Telegram servers belong to Telegram and are maintained by Telegram employees. Unauthorized access to any data is impossible. Throughout its history, Telegram has never released private messages to third parties — and its encryption has never been broken,” the spokesperson stated.
