The 10 countries with the most military aircraft in the world

When it comes to military aircraft, the United States has the world’s largest inventory. The aircraft from the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Marine Corps represent 25% of all military aircraft on the planet.

1 – United States

In 2021, the United States had an active inventory of 13,246 aircraft, of which 2,740 are just combat aircraft. This number is higher than the total aircraft of most of the world’s military forces.

2 – Russia

The Russians have an active fleet of 4,173 aircraft, of which 1,511 are Air Force and Navy combat aircraft. The most numerous model is the Sukhoi Su-27 and its derivatives (Su-30 and Su-35), with 350 units just in the Air Force.

Almost half of China’s 3,285 aircraft are combat aircraft. Of the 1,571 aircraft that fall into this category, the most numerous is the Chengdu J-7, a locally produced aircraft that is a licensed copy of the Soviet MiG-21. There are 388 aircraft in service just in the single-seat variation of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force.

Of the 2,182 aircraft in service in India, 694 are combat aircraft. The force has a mix of attack and fighter aircraft of very different origins and generations, which includes from the locally designed supersonic HAL Tejas to the European Sepecat Jaguar, Mirage 2000, and Rafale. But the most numerous fighter is the Russian Sukhoi Su-30, with 248 units.

South Korea has 1,595 military aircraft, with 492 aircraft designated for combat as the main function. Even with a force that already has the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II as the most modern aircraft, the most numerous fighter of the Republic of Korea Air Force is still the veteran Northrop F-5E Tiger II, with 156 units.

Japanese military aviation has 1,449 aircraft in its inventory. The fighter force is composed of the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II, F-15J (produced under license in Japan) and also the Mitsubishi F-2, a local project based on the F-16.

With 1,387 military aircraft, Pakistan has a combat aircraft force of 447 aircraft. But besides the recent Sino-Pakistani JF-17, the Asian country has in its inventory the American F-16, the Chinese Chengdu J-7 and even the veteran French Dassault Mirage III and 5.

Of Egypt’s 1,062 military aircraft, 338 are combat aircraft. It has one of the most diverse fighter forces in the world, with Russian, American and European aircraft. The most numerous of them is the American F-16, with 168 units only in the A and C variations.

Turkey has 1,057 military aircraft in the Air Force, Army, and Navy. Of this total, 157 units are the American single-seat fighter F-16C and 48 units of the veteran F-4E.

10 – France

France has 1,055 military aircraft. The European country is one of the few among the major world powers with a fighter force designed and produced in the country: the Dassault Mirage 2000 and Rafale.
