Using the Shroud of Turin, the artificial intelligence tool Midjourney was able to create an image of what the true face of Jesus Christ might have looked like.

The Shroud of Turin is a piece of linen believed to have been the burial cloth of Jesus when he died in 33 AD. It has been preserved since 1578 at the royal chapel of the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista in Turin, Italy.

In addition to the marks that seem to show the front and back of a person’s body, the piece of cloth also has a mark resembling a face. This information was used by the AI to generate the image showing the world what Jesus’ face might have looked like.

The image, generated by Midjourney at the request of Daily Express, shows a man with shoulder-length hair, as well as a beard and mustache, exactly like most historical depictions of Jesus.

However, historians suggest that this image of Jesus is inaccurate, particularly with regard to his skin tone. “Jesus would have had darker skin, brown eyes, like the local population,” said Dr. Meredith Warren, senior professor of biblical and religious studies at the University of Sheffield, to MailOnline.

“He died before the age of 40. He wasn’t rich and spent a lot of time outdoors, so he likely had some wrinkles on his face. His hands and feet were probably calloused and rough,” she added.
