The new feature intensifies the competition with the rival app, X, formerly known as Twitter. The use of hashtags in Threads is expected to function similarly to how it works on Instagram, the interconnected social network, where tagged words will display similar posts.
The news was announced by Meta‘s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and Instagram‘s director, Adam Mosseri, on their respective Threads accounts. Currently, hashtags are being tested only in Australia, but the functionality should be available in other countries soon.
With the introduction of hashtags, another feature may be on the verge of becoming a reality – Trending Topics. Recently, an image displaying this feature, famous on X, being used on Threads was leaked online after a Meta employee accidentally shared a screenshot.
