A tourist who was visiting Dubai was shocked after discovering that WhatsApp and FaceTime are blocked in the United Arab Emirates.

Emma, a TikToker who shares travel content, posted a video to reveal “one thing she can’t get used to about Dubai.”

“I can’t do FaceTime with anyone I know. I think it has to do with a law about video chats, but I’m not really sure,” she explained in the video, which has already received over 1.4 million views.

“But I always forget, and when I come back, I try to make a video call and it just doesn’t work,” Emma added, giving a heads-up to people planning to visit Dubai.

Although the government of the United Arab Emirates has never explained why these apps are banned, this has been the case for years and is almost inevitable, even for tourists.

Fortunately, if you really need to make a video call while in the country, using a VPN can be a good solution to bypass the problem, but it will come with the additional cost of the service subscription.
