While countries are increasingly investing in technologies to send humans into space, the U.S. is already preparing for future space wars.

The U.S. Army has begun recruiting individuals to form a team of soldiers specialized in space combat by October 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Defense last Friday (2).

Military officials believe this unprecedented move will prepare the force for 21st-century conflicts, which could occur on land, in the air, at sea, in cyberspace, or in outer space.

“These soldiers will become the experts we turn to during the next conflict,” said Lieutenant General Sean A. Gainey, commander of the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command, in a statement.

“Our Army space professionals support unique capabilities to deny or disrupt adversaries’ use of space assets, ensuring Army forces maintain the initiative to fight from positions of relative advantage across all domains.”

Gainey emphasized that the 40D MOS division will differ from the Space Force. In this case, Army space professionals will work on tactics to disrupt enemy satellite networks, for example.

“We are focused on tactical maneuver warfare with our ground forces, pushing this capability forward so our forces can leverage the effects of a space-based system, directly benefiting the operator on the ground.”
