Coca-Cola has announced plans to launch the world’s first hydrogen-powered vending machines at the upcoming World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
Developed in collaboration with Fuji Electric, a Japanese electrical equipment company, the new vending machines would operate without needing to be plugged in.
Instead, they would use replaceable hydrogen cartridges to generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, and this energy would then be stored in a battery.
“A hydrogen cartridge is loaded into the generator, and electricity is generated through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in the air,” Coca-Cola explained.
Coca-Cola plans to install 58 of these hydrogen-powered vending machines at the World Expo. Each machine will have an informational display to educate visitors on how hydrogen energy works.
If the project is successful, the installation of the machines could take place globally. However, it is worth noting that Coca-Cola has not shared details on how long the machines can run before their hydrogen cartridges need to be replaced.
