A report from CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) revealed a rise in used iPhone sales in the United States.

According to the data, the proportion of people who traded in or sold their old iPhones increased from 43% to 49% between 2020 and 2025.

At the same time, only 37% kept their old devices, either as a backup phone or to pass on to friends or family. In 2020, that figure was 44%.

Additionally, 14% of old iPhones were reported as lost, stolen, or damaged — nearly the same as the 13% recorded in 2020.

The CIRP report shows that getting rid of an old phone has become easier and more beneficial, driven by improvements in resale platforms.

This habit was already common in countries where iPhones were considered relatively expensive compared to local income, according to the site 95toMac.

But with rising iPhone prices in the US, the trend shows that Americans have also started treating their old phones as valuable and tradable assets.
