A terrifying video captured the moment a “pet lion” escaped from the farm where it lived and attacked a mother and her two children.

The incident occurred in Lahore, Pakistan, when the large feline escaped from the farm where it was being kept as a “pet.” It jumped over a wall and quickly charged at the woman and her two children, aged 5 and 7.

The mother, who was not identified, turned and tried to flee, but the animal jumped on her back and knocked her to the ground. All three sustained injuries to the face and arms, but none were life-threatening, according to authorities.

While some bystanders were seen rushing to help the mother and children being attacked, the lion’s owner did nothing to intervene, according to a police report.

The unidentified owner made no attempt to contain the escaped animal, said the father of the children to the police. The man was arrested days later and did not have a license to keep the lion at home, said Mubeen Elahi, Director General of the Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department, to the newspaper Dawn.

“No individual is allowed to keep a lion without a license, without meeting the required cage size, and without following other standard operating procedures,” Elahi told the outlet, emphasizing that illegal possession is punishable by up to seven years in prison or a fine of approximately US$17,500.

The lion has been relocated to a wildlife conservation park, authorities said, who are now conducting searches on other farms in the region. So far, five people have been arrested and 18 large felines have been confiscated by the department.
