The AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory), the technological research unit of the United States Air Force, has released a video of a test of a new low-cost bomb capable of sinking moving ships.

Called Quicksink, the munition is based on a GBU-31 bomb (a free-fall Mk-84 with a JDAM kit to become “smart”). Launched by an F-15E Strike Eagle, it successfully hit a moving target ship in the Gulf of Mexico.

The project aims to enable unguided bombs to be adapted to effectively attack and destroy moving ships with precision, serving as a lower-cost alternative to anti-ship missiles and submarine-launched torpedoes. Watch the video here.
