Pablo Moura, 18, was sleeping when his phone exploded in his bed last Sunday (27) in the city of Campo Grande, in Brazil’s Central-West region.

The photographer’s device, a Xiaomi Poco F3, was not plugged into the charger at the time of the incident, according to Pablo’s brother, Luan Staab, who recorded a video showing the condition of the phone after the event.

Pablo woke up startled, reporting that he felt heat near his head. When he got up, he noticed that the mattress was on fire.

Luan said their mother even heard the explosion but didn’t think the noise had come from inside the house. “When my mother went there, there was only toxic smoke, and the phone was also releasing a lot of smoke because it was burning,” he recalled in an interview with g1.

Thanks to a pillow that was between Pablo and the device, he only suffered a burn on his finger, according to his brother — but the consequences could have been catastrophic.
