A YouTuber shocked internet users by revealing how much he earned from a single video that got 1 million views on YouTube Shorts, the platform’s short video section.

Explaining how YouTube calculates earnings, the YouTuber TubeBuddy revealed that the average RPM (revenue per thousand views) for a long video is about $3, meaning a video with 100,000 views would earn the content creator around $300.
In comparison, the average earnings for a video on YouTube Shorts is about $0.05, meaning the same amount of views generates much less money.
Since Shorts doesn’t have the same reach as YouTube in general, it’s not surprising that earnings aren’t equivalent to those from a longer video, which consequently has more ads.
With this in mind, TubeBuddy explained that he managed to earn a total of $99 for 3.1 million views on his Shorts. This means he earned about $32 per million views.
TikTok uses a very similar RPM model to YouTube Shorts to pay its content creators. The amount can vary from account to account, but generally, one can make between $20 to $40 per million views.
It’s important to remember that this money comes from the TikTok Creativity Program, which is not available in all countries. So, if you’re thinking of quitting everything to become a tiktoker, keep in mind that you’ll probably need to embrace some sponsored posts to generate a decent income.
