In addition to making access more secure, this also eliminates the need for SMS authentication. The feature, which was in testing in the beta version of the messaging app, has started to be made available to all Android users and will be gradually implemented over the next few months.

According to WhatsApp’s Chief Product Officer, Alice Newton-Rex, speaking to TechCrunch, the ‘access keys’ are aimed at making the app login simpler and easier.

“Verifying with access keys will make logging back into WhatsApp easier and more secure. We are excited to launch this on WhatsApp and provide users with an additional layer of security.”
